Pledges and Rules.
I have already commented at length about the Republican and Democratic
party loyalty oaths here in Florida which are for the most part concealed
from the voting public, yet we as a democratic society should also be
alarmed by the
unpublished pledges and presidential debate rules which govern our
so-called free and open elections. It seems to me that both of these
items should be public records. Learning about a debating rule which
a candidate or his campaign insisted on during the three presidential
debats may provide valuable insight
about that candidate. Witnessing the pledges signed by Betty Castor and
Peter Deutsch on the Democrat's side and the pledges signed by Mel
Martinez and Bill McCollum on the Republican's side would probably have the
effect of the two major parties doing away with the practice. The Sentinel
would often report that Castor accused Deutsch or maybe it was visa versa
of violating the pledge as would they report the same accusations made by
Martinez and McCollum during their primary, yet I never saw that the
Sentinel printed these pledges and I have been unable to find them using
Google.
